President's Remarks

Preparations are well underway for Financial Planning Week, October 6-12, 2008.  This year our annual symposium will fall during Financial Planning week on October 10th from 8:30 – 4:30 at the Norfolk Airport Hilton.

The Symposium Chairman, Chuck McGee, and his committee have put together an agenda that will not only focus on “Boomers” but also include the two hour CFP Ethics Continuing Education (CE).  As we sought ideas from other chapters for  ideas, we found that quite a few other chapters were successful at providing the CFP® Ethics CE at their Symposium.  So we are going to give it a try this year as well.  We welcome your feedback.

As the CFPs® are well aware, the revised Standard of Conduct will be implemented on July 1, 2008.  Our hope is that by October we will have gotten through the “learning curve” of the new standards and be able to discuss both specific items of the Standards as well as interpretation based upon some experience.

The goal of Financial Planning Week is to raise the public’s awareness of the benefits of financial planning.  In addition to the events that Gayle Blachura is putting together, we are going to participate in FPA National’s program of “I Am FPA”, which is a national branding campaign.  For more information and details on “I Am FPA”, please see the link below  The fit between Financial Planning Week and “I Am FPA” is perfect and appropriate.

We will be getting additional information out about both the Symposium and Financial Planning Week in the months ahead.  Save the Date:  October 10, 2008 for our Educational Symposium.

Cheap Labor!

Do you have a list of things in your office you just never get around to?  Is your technology outdated?  Are you considering adding staff, but aren’t sure?  Our Chapter has contacted Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University to help match up students looking for a future in financial planning with firms in our area.

The students we’ve seen have been talented and motivated.  Firms who have hired interns say it has been very beneficial.  If you are considering an intern or interested in more information, we have ideas on our website, www.fpahamptonroads.com under Career Development.  Learn more about: Qualities to consider in hiring an intern, What should you look for in an intern’s education, Structure of the internship, Duties and responsibilities, Common tasks, Compensation, Developing a contract, and Best Practices.
